Director, Business Transformation, Rio Tinto – Kennecott

Steve Sands has been at Kennecott Utah Copper since 2005 in roles ranging from permitting and assurance, energy improvement, external affairs, to his current role as director of business transformation. Steve has two decades of experience providing solutions to drive industrial environmental and energy improvement. His experience includes environmental permitting, project management, policy and regulatory development, communications and community affairs, and business performance improvement. Steve is the chairman of the Utah Air Quality Board, and chairman of the Utah Clean Air Partnership (UCAIR), a non-profit focused on actions to improve Utah’s air quality. He is also co-chair of the Natural Resources Business Council for the Salt Lake Chamber, and has held national and local leadership roles in the Air and Waste Management Association, Utah Pollution Prevention Association, and American Institute of Chemical Engineers. Steve is a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Utah, has a Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering, a Masters degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering, and a Masters degree in Business Administration.
